What Donkey Are You Striking? (The Story of Balaam’s Donkey)

Balaam was a prophet of God.

He’s more known as a false prophet.

But what do we know about Balaam according to what the Word of God says?

  1. He heard God’s voice

  2. He spoke only what God wanted him speak

So what was his issue?

3. He spoke God’s word hastily for profit

Balaam was willing to go when God didn’t call him to go because there were opportunities for his personal gain

In short, he was greedy

We live in an era where sharing the word of God is closely tied to:

  1. profit

  2. personal gain

  3. power and authority

The Word should profit the soul, not the pocket

Christian influencers want brand deals more than they want to be branded by the Truth of the Word.

We should be branded by the Holy Spirit, our seal of redemption, not branded by haste and greed.

Balaam had a destination in mind, but didn’t wait to hear from God because there was an opportunity awaiting him.

So God used his donkey to speak to him.

The donkey was meant to wake him up and get him back on the right path.

But instead of heeding to his noble steed, he was driven by his own greed.

Balaam struck the donkey 3 times when it tried to take him on a different path.

God will use a donkey in our life to take us back to where we need to be.

But we often like to blame the donkey because we fail to see the destruction in our path.

There was an Angel standing in the way of Balaam. He didn’t see it, but his donkey did.

The donkey tried:

  1. turning away from the path into the field

  2. crushing Balaam’s foot

  3. laying down so Balaam couldn’t go anywhere

The donkey was God’s instrument to correct his path.

What donkey are you striking?

The donkey could see what Balaam couldn’t.

The donkey helped open up Balaam’s eyes.

Discern these donkeys that are trying to help you before you keep striking them.
