How to Discover Your Heavenly Language and Build your Boldest Faith (How to Speak in Tongues)
Speaking in tongues is a powerful, spiritual form of communication with the Father.
It has lead me to self-deliverance, healing, revealed mysteries and revelation of the Kingdom of God, and has built my faith stronger.
I share Paul’s desire when he said, “I wish you all spoke with tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:5)
My goal in writing this is for you to unlock your heavenly prayer language so you can share in the blessings it will grant you.
How exactly will speaking in tongues bless you? What is the purpose of speaking in tongues?
1 Corinthians 14:4 says, “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself”
What does it mean to ‘edify’?
Edify:
to build a house, erect a building
to restore by building, to rebuild, repair
to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness
to grow in wisdom and piety
embolden
Speaking in tongues will build your faith stronger than ever before and unlock a different spiritual understanding of your connection to your Father
Jude 1:20 says, “Build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit”
After reading this, you might ask how do I know that verse is talking about speaking in tongues?
Well the Greek shows us that it’s the same exact word found in 1 Corinthians 14:14:
“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth”
When you pray in tongues, it’s not your understanding or your natural mind praying, it’s your spirit praying to the Father on its deepest, most intimate level.
Paul says, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (1 Corinthians 14:18)
Why would Paul say this?
Because speaking in tongues edifies, emboldens, and strengthens the faith of a believer.
No wonder why there’s such a large assignment of the enemy to STOP believers from speaking in tongues!
I pray that as you continue to read this, these lies will be broken down and your heavenly prayer language would begin to emerge.
Who is the gift of tongues for?
You may believe that it’s not for you.
Why?
Because 1 Corinthians 12 talks about the gifts of Holy Spirit and it says there are “diversities of gifts”
So there’s diversities of gifts, and the gift of speaking in tongues is just not for you, right?
Biblically, I don’t think so.
Why would Paul say “I wish you all spoke with tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:5) to a large congregation of believers if that were true?
The gift of tongues is for everyone who believes.
Now, what are the different types of heavenly tongues?
There’s 2 that we see outlined in scripture:
1) speaking a foreign, human language
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. (Acts 2:3-6)
2) speaking a heavenly prayer language
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. (1 Corinthians 14:2)
I also believe one can speak in a demonic tongue, or in a tongue of the flesh.
The spirit can also speak from a place of anger, wrath, hatred, impatience, etc.
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. (James 3:6-10)
I’m sure we all know the flesh has a lot to say sometimes 😂
Now, what you’ve really been waiting for…
3 Keys to Discovering Your Heavenly Tongue and Developing Your Most Powerful Faith
How to Pray in Tongues:
1) Surrender
Another way to say surrender is submit. You must submit your tongue to the will of the Spirit. You must release control of your tongue and render it as a vessel to be consumed by The Holy Spirit and fire. It’s no longer your tongue, it’s God’s tongue.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? (1 Corinthians 6:15a)
I (John, the Baptist) indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11)
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
2) Faith
You won’t move in a way you don’t believe you can. You must have faith. According to your faith, let it be so.
Speaking in tongues is a move that goes beyond your understanding which is why it doesn’t require your understanding, it requires your faith.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)
For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
3) Move
Your tongue is surrendered to God. You’ve released it out of your control and into His hands. You’ve granted the Spirit to move through it.
And not only that, but you believe the Spirit can and will move through it. You trust God.
What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? (James 2:14)
Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:17)
Now, move! Start speaking in your God-given tongue FROM your spirit.
Praise God!
Welcome to a beautiful journey of speaking in tongues.
First Steps:
It may be uncomfortable at first. You may not not really even be sure if you’re speaking in a heavenly tongue or just speaking gibberish. But the more you exercise the gift, the stronger and clearer it will get.
Tongues, like faith, is a muscle.
If you’ve ever first begun working out at the gym you may have been doing a bicep curl, but you weren’t even sure if you were doing it right.
Why? You didd’t feel the burn. You didn’t feel a mind-muscle connection.
But the more bicep curls you did, the stronger you can grip and grasp that muscle.
Likewise, the more you speak in a tongue, the more The Spirit will grip your spirit, and the more your understanding and revelation will grow.
****God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. (1 Corinthians 6:17)
Before you speak in tongues:
A prerequisite to speaking in tongue is that you need the Holy Spirit. You can read my blog here on how to receive the Holy Spirit if you haven’t yet.
Let’s go a level deeper
How your heavenly tongue will help you:
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
When you don’t know what to pray, the Spirit will pray for you with your tongue.
How incredible is that!
God will use you to pray for you!
God will use you to heal you!
God will use you to deliver you.
And by “you” I mean His Spirit and power working through you as a surrendered vessel.
When you pray in tongues, it’s the Spirit who will begin to search the deepest parts of your heart and mind and it will draw out what’s truly within you, or the revelation you need to receive, or the understanding you need to get.
What an incredible blessing.
1 John 2:27 puts it this way:
But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
The anointing will guide you, teach you, and lead you.
It’s important to clarify that this is not your reason to stop attending church, going to Bible study, and learning from a teacher.
Can you speak in tongues publicly?
It’s important to be wise with our gifts and know that our gifts aren’t for us, but for other people.
God wants to give you the gift of tongues so you can grow, and ultimately help others, believers and nonbelievers.
So if your gift is the reason why someone isn’t coming to the faith, you’re using your gift wrong.
****For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? 9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. 12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.
13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
Speaking and Interpreting the Tongue
It’s good to understand that the same person speaking in the tongue, can also follow up with the interpretation
The tongue and the interpretation of the tongue can come from the same mouth.
I think we often believe that the speaker of the tongue needs another human being standing next to them to follow up with an interpretation. This is not always true. The same mouth can speak heavenly things and from human understanding.
Does that mean we can always speak in tongues publicly even if there’s a non-believer present because the interpretation will follow?
Again, it’s about being wise and winning souls in the presence of a non believer.
If this message blessed you on how to speak in tongues, make sure you share it with another believer.
